SANFORD - In the Mainers second road game of the season, Stephen Arntsen (Manorville, NY) took the loss on the mound as Sanford fell 4-1 at Maxfield Sports Complex. Upper Valley improved to 2-2 on the season, thanks to a strong showing from Mike Coss on the hill.

Arnsten retired the leadoff batter in the first before allowing a walk to put one aboard. After a fly out to left field, Upper Valley’s cleanup hitter blasted one into the left field trees of White River Junction, Vermont, to give the Nighthawks the lead.

Upper Valley would tack on two more runs in the eighth, as the combo of Jake Dexter (Oakland, ME) and David Hoar III (Peabody, MA) would be accountable.

The Mainers also saw a strong outing from St. Johns product Joe Kelly (Glendora, CA), as he went 2.1 innings after Arnsten’s outing was complete. The bullpen trio of Dexter, Kelly and Hoar have been just three of the shining stars in the Mainers bullpen, as pitching has been a positive for this team so far.

Arnsten would go 5.2 total, giving up those two runs in the first inning. With four K’s and three hits, a strong outing in his second start would drop him to 0-1 on the season.

The Mainers lone run would come in the first. After Connor Aube (Falmouth, ME) drew a leadoff walk and took second on a wild pitch, Jimmy Kerr’s (Scottsdale, AZ) infield single would put runners on the corners. Riley Pittman (North Richman Hills, TX) would hit a fielder’s choice, but would push Aube across the plate. From there, the Mainers would only muster six more hits on the night, including a 2-for-3 outing from Zach Scott (Scottsdale, AZ).

The Mainers are back in action tonight against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at Goodall Park.
